OLE SOLDIER REST FROM EARTHLY CARES
Henry E Jenkins, Veteran of Civil War, Dies After Short Illness With Influenza
One by one the old boys are passing. Henry E Jenkins, a soldier of the Union Army in the Civil War died after a short illness at the Alva Hospital.
Henry E Jenkins married Harriet Todhunter 20 Jan 1865. To this marriage union 7 children were born: John, Jas, Ernest, Esther Harmon, Eva Winter, Frank, & Best.
During the Civil War Mr. Jenkins was a spy in the Union Army. He was a member of Alva GAR. His wife preceded him to the Great Beyond about 4 months ago. Besides his children, he leaves 19 grchildren, 5 grgrchildren, plus sisters Caroline Halsted, & Sarah Carpenter.
Mr. Jenkins was a kind Christian gentleman, a member of the Christian church, a good neighbor & affectionate father. He was always found ready & willing to help in the thing that make for a better place in which to live.
Pastor Rev J Asbell comducted the funeral held at the Garrison Funeral Home. Interment was made in Ewing, near his former home.
The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of all in their bereavement.

If cemeteries could talk. They'd tell us tells of love, intrigue, bravery, romance, hardship. A way of life only kept alive in books & movies. One of those stories lies buried beneath a white rock stone marked:

Little of Private Jenkins life is known. He undoubtedly lived a colorful life. Besides a wife & 7 children to spice up his existence, Jenkins was a spy for the Union Army during the Civil War. Not much is known about his military career except that he served in the 3rd US Artillery Division.
After marrying Harriet, the family eventually made their was to OK. A rock house was their was home.
Family members grgrdaughter Webbie Short, her son Ed Short, & grson Tony, take care of the Ewing cemetery where Jenkins is buried. They lost their source of information w/the death of the family patriarch Rube Winter.
This Memorial Day as family members make their pilgrimage to this hollowed burial ground, Mr. Jenkins, though unknown personally to those still living, will be revered for his contribution to America's freedom.
