Peter Meriwether Boyden was born in Cismont, Albemarle county, Virginia, the youngest son of the Rev. Ebenezer Boyden and his wife Mary Sheffey. He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1872 and attended the Episcopal Seminary of Virginia, graduating in 1877. His jolly demeanor as a child earned him the family nickname of "Merry Peterwether".

One member recalls how he would come from New Market on Saturday afternoon for the Guild meeting; spend the night at a parishioner's home, then have the service on Sunday morning.
