Susan Roberts Swift Norman, 89, passed away Saturday, October 3, 2009.
Susan Norman was born on April 7, 1920 in the logging town of Knoxo, MS. She moved to Atmore, AL, as a child and graduated from high school there. After attending the University of Alabama for two years, she transferred to the University of North Carolina and graduated in 1941.
In 1942, she married naval officer Geoffrey Norman, and spent the next seventeen years fulfilling the many roles of an officer's wife and mother of four -- moving a total of 33 times before her husband retired in 1959. In 1964, after Geoffrey's death, she began a career in real estate, eventually becoming one of the pioneers in the development of Perdido Key. In recent years, she had lived in retirement at Azalea Trace. Throughout her years, Susan built countless friendships by her actions on behalf of others helping and supporting other officer's wives in times of trial, turning her house over to friends dealing with tragedy, working relentlessly to take care of the needs of myriad real estate clients who subsequently became her dear friends, sharing her sense of fun and companionship with her fellow retirees at Azalea Trace. Within her family, she was the beloved matriarch known as SuSu, a mother and grandmother whose generosity of hospitality and heart - and fun - knew no bounds. She will be missed beyond measure.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Geoffrey Percival Norman (Radm. USN); father, George Robinson Swift; mother, Margherita Ligon Swift; and her brother, George Robinson Swift, II.
Survivors include her sister, Margherita Swift Jones; two sons, Geoffrey Walter Norman (Marsha) of Dorset, VT and James Edward Norman (Susan) of Fairfax, VA; two daughters, Margaret Brenda Griffiths (Kenneth) of Atlanta, GA and Susan Eleanor Bolinger (Don) of Concord, MA; seven grandchildren, John Forrest Norman (Lydia), Brooke Norman, Christopher Norman, Hadley Stock (Mike), Sarah Bolinger, Susan Griffiths and Geoffrey Bolinger.
Memorial Service will be held 1:00pm Thursday, October 8, 2009 at Christ Episcopal Church with the Rev. Harry Hill officiating. There will be a Private Family Burial at Barrancas National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan's Purse, PO Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607 or to Azalea Trace Employee Appreciation Fund, 10100 Hillview Dr., Pensacola, FL 32514.
HARPER-MORRIS MEMORIAL CHAPEL is in charge of arrangements.
