From the Grapeland Messenger Thursday June 2, 1938. "Mrs. Tom Herod died-94 years, 6 months, 11 days. Rev. T. P. Lott and G. W. Walker conducted the services. Interment was at Hayes Spring Cemetery. Survivors are daughters Mrs. C. A. Story and Mrs. E. M. Carson of Grapeland and a son Mack Herod of Snyder."

Malissa was the daughter of Joseph Randolph and Phoebe Clementine Yarbrough.

Hayes Spring(s) Cemetery is located west of Grapeland on FM 227. From city limits go 3.2 miles. Turn left on a dirt road and drive 0.3 mi. to the cemetery on the left.

Besides Melissa, also buried in Hayes Spring Cemetery are her daughter Mary Clementine (Mollie Herod) Storey, her husband Charles Allen Storey, and their daughter Edna Mae Storey. Another of Melissa's daughters, Martha Eugenia (Jean Herod) Carson, and her husband, Evander Monroe Frisby Carson, are also buried in Hayes Spring Cemetery.

Melissa was so afflicted with palsy that she had to be tied in a chair to keep her from falling out.

From Trinity County, Texas, History page 818, Family 1496, an article written by Sam Houston Yarbrough's daughter Lillie Mae (Sweet) Carpenter: "My father, Dr. Sam Houston Yarbrough, was born in Grapeland April 28, 1862, and was the baby of this large family. He finished school in Grapeland; then he studied to be a dentist under Dr. Goolsby of Crockett. He received a certificate from the State and traveled to different towns after he married Alice Elizabeth Davis in 1893." They moved back to Trinity in 1903 and stayed, and my father opened his office then and practiced until his health failed in 1920." Uncle Sam died Oct. 9, 1939.
