Samuel Helm was born on August 20, 1803 and died in the Fall Creek Township area of Adams County, Illinois on October 23, 1853, aged 50 years 2 months and 3 days. Apparently he and two of his sons all died from the same illness within days of each other, his son John W. died on the 12th of October, aged 10 years 6 months and 24 days and his namesake, Samuel W. died 6 days later on the 19th, aged 7 years 5 months and 13 days. As stated above, Samuel Sr. himself died just 5 days later on the 23rd of October in 1853. All of the grave markers in this family plot are either broken or have fallen over and have been placed around the stump of an old cedar tree that was probably planted over 150 years ago as the original marker for this family burial plot. Many families back then planted cedar trees at grave sites to mark the exact burial spot of family members until a suitable stone marker could be purchased, which due to the cost sometimes took years...Samuel M.
