A. B. GOOKIN
A. B. Gookin, son of Thomas and Phoebe Gookin, was born May 6, 1872, in Benton Twp., Lucas county, and died at his home in Chariton, Sunday morning, Aug. 26, having attained the age of 79 years, three months and 20 days.
He grew to manhood on the farm, attending the country school District No. 4 in Benton Twp. Later, he went to a college in Humeston and then to a School of Commerce at Rockford, Ill. He taught school in Lucas and Wayne counties until he went into Insurance and Real Estate business in Chariton, in which he continued until the time of his death.
On Oct. 29, 1902, he was united in marriage to Maude M. McFarland, who preceded him in death Feb. 19, 1943.
To this union two sons were born, Albert Brisbine of Chariton and Ralph Burton of Pittsburgh, Pa. Besides the two sons there are two grandchildren, Cristie of Pittsburgh and Albert Brisine Jr. of Chariton; two brothers, Elmer of Chariton and Harve A. of Polson, Mont., and a sister, Mrs. Martha A. Parker of Chariton. One sister, Effie A. Scales, and a brother, Walter C., have preceded him in death.
Mr. Gookin was prominent in many community activities. Perhaps more particularly the Lake View Country club and the Knights of Pythias. He was a member of the Chariton Lodge for over 50 years and was past Grand Chancellor of the domain of Iowa.
Services were held at the Beardsley Funeral home Wednesday, Aug. 29, at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Archie Beals and Rev. Robert Swick officiated. Burial was made in the Chariton cemetery. The K. of P. was in charge of committal rites.
