Phebe Beardslee

Death of An Old Resident:
Phebe Beardslee, the last of the family of Bulkley Beardslee, late of Indian Orchard, died at the homestead of her mother, who was Lucretia Kimble, Saturday April 29, aged 88. She was born April 21, 1828 and has always resided on the Bulkley Beardslee estate at Indian Orchard. Her sister Sarah died a year ago, leaving her alone. She has been cared for by John Mandeville's family and others since the death of her sister.
Her father was a native of Connecticut a man of remarkable force of character who came into the county in the early days and soon became one of its leading citizens. Her deceased's mother was the daughter of Walter Kimble, another sturdy character among Wayne's former citizenship.
Miss Beardslee was an old time member of Stephen Torrey's Bible class and she became a member of the Honesdale Presbyterian church in 1861. She leaves a large number of nephews and nieces, among them the children of John Mandeville of Hawley who married Helen Beardslee; the children of the late H.B. Beardslee, who was for many years editor of the Wayne County Herald. George, Minnie Butler and Jennie of Wilkes-Barre; Charles Simrell of Chicago; children of Walter Beardslee in the state of Texas; also Artemus and Walter Branning and Sarah Hopkins. Edna Mandeville and her brother were particularly kind in caring for the deceased during her illness. She has not been strong for several months, because of her advanced age but was able to be about practically all the time until the last, death being due to heart failure.
Funeral services will be held from her late residence on Tuesday, May 2 at 1:30. Interment to be made in Indian Orchard cemetery.
