Charles Bickel, 99, long time resident of Harper, Kansas, died Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Harper Hospital.

He was born on July 22, 1910 at Perryton, Texas, to John and Alice (Bare) Bickel. He was the last of seven children born in the family. He attended the Harper High School.

On October 17, 1942, Charles married Catherine Glassburn in Harper. Charles worked many years with the Gas Service Company in Conway Springs, Clearwater and Harper. He retired from the company in 1972.

In 1969, Charles and Catherine moved from Conway Springs to Harper.

He was a longtime member of the Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church for over eighty years.
He was predeceased by his parents, sisters, Maggie May Bauer, Mary Ellen Hollcroft, and Hattie Belle Bickel; brothers, Rufus, Chauncey (John), and Fred Bickel.

Charles is survived by his wife, Catherine, of the home, daughter, Marlys Templeton ( Ed )of Tampa, Florida; sons, Lynn Bickel ( Karen) of Brighton, Colorado and Larry Bickel (Marcia) of Harper, KS. Six grandchildren: Jeff Templeton, Kristin (John) Lockhard, Kevin (Nathalie) Bickel, Kristi (Patrick) Mertaugh, Stephanie and Jon Bickel. Six great-grandchildren: Ashley Ehlert, A.J. and Zach Templeton, Olivia Bickel, Ellie and Joey Mertaugh.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at Pleasant Valley Mennonite Church.
