When his father died in 1848, the Barge children are found in the 1850 Census living with their Uncle, John Bates in Dallas Co., Al on the Joel Matthews Plantation where John was the overseer. This plantation is described in the book, Memories of Old Cahaba.

First married in 1854 to Sarah Davison Hamblen Glasscock widow of William Shilo Glasscock. By 1860, he and Sarah had moved to Milam County, Texas.

Married Frances Ann Locklin in 1857.
