My great, great, great, grandfather, Otha, was born to Theotha and Jane Caldwell Tharp of Halifax, Virginia. Otha was about 9 years old when his father died and about 13 years old when his mother died. Some information suggests he moved with his brothers and half brothers to Lincoln County, Tennessee when he was about 18, in about 1821.

In 1824 he married Cynthia Harrison of South Carolina, daughter of John Harrison and Sara Middleton, and had the following children:

Jane C. Thorp Joslin
William Goodhope Thorp
Susannah Parmele Thorp Joslin
Mary R. Thorp Joslin
Sarah J. Thorp Doss
Baby Thorp
Martha M. Thorp Perry
Daniel Pleasant Thorp

Some records indicate some of the above children were born in Alabama.

They were living in Mississippi when Cynthia died in 1845 in Panola Co., and Otha then married Mary Jane "Polly" Doss (3rd great grandmother), daughter of John P.and Nancy Beauchamp Doss, about 1846 in Mississippi. They are listed in the 1850 Panola Co., Mississippi census. Otha was about 25 years older than Mary Jane. She cared for his younger children from his previous marriage and had the following children with Otha, all born in Mississippi:

Nancy Elizabeth Tharp Hendley
Malinda Adeline Tharp Franks
Lydia Frances Tharp (Tharpe) Franks
Henrietta Ellen Tharp Young (2nd great grandmother)

Otha died at about age 54 in Panola Co., Mississippi

After Otha died in April 1857, Polly married John Henry Davis Sr., a widower, about 1859 and they had 5 children:

William Washington "Doss" Davis
Jackson Doss Davis
Jane Emmie Lee Francis Davis
Annabelle Davis Roper
Rice Davis

They lived in Mississippi through the devastation of the Civil War caring for two young children during that time.

John Davis died in Mississippi in 1876, and the 1880 Neals Stone, Chickasaw Co., Mississippi Census shows Polly widowed with her children, Jackson Davis, 18, Jane E. Davis, 12, Annabelle Davis, 10, and Rice Davis, 8. She moved to Texas with her younger and older children some time after that.

She died in 1914 at age 86 at Travis, Falls Co., Texas.
