"The Martyr Regiment"

The regiment received this nickname since approx. 1/3 of its number died of disease such
as typhoid from Jul-Dec 1863 in Louisiana & Mississippi after the Siege of Vicksburg.
Others were discharged disabled and died on the trip home or soon after. There were so
few able-bodied men left that the 38th Iowa was combined with the 34th Iowa Infantry for
the rest of the Civil War.
