Mrs. Sallie Dement Allen, wife of W. H. Allen, was born in Wilson county, Tenn., on Jan. 10, 1850. From the maternal side she was descended from Rev. John Bond, one of the most widely influential preachers of Middle Tennessee. The sterling qualities of character manifested in her ancestry found a large place in her life. The heritage of a noble parentage should be highly reckoned.
On Dec. 30, 1865, she and Mr. Allen were united in marriage, thus forming a union of life that fitly expressed the union of hearts. Eight children, sweet cementers of affection and purpose, came to this home, bringing joys and responsibilities. Of these all but the youngest have about reached maturity.
A blessed privilege, the mother's ambition, was hers. To their grieved heart sweet memories come with no lingering steps of the fond regard and care given by mother.
The family moved to Alabama in 1873, and in 1889 settled near Brookhaven, Miss, remaining here until the removal to Jackson, in 1898. Mrs.
Allen united with the Baptist Church in 1874, and her strong faith showed itself in beneficent living. In her death she illustrated the power of the Christian religion. Conscious of the approaching end she calmly bade farewell and peacefully fell "asleep in Jesus."
