Cecil Reed Howell 81, passed into Glory on February 26, 2005 in Indianapolis after a lengthy illness. A resident of Indianapolis since 1947, he was born in McHenry Ohio County, KY on July 31, 1923 to the late Robert E. Lee Howell and Orpha Dixie Rowe-Howell. He was preceded in death by his brothers Floyd Plummer Howell, Ernest Howell, Corbett Robert Lee Howell and Glendon Howell; sisters Bessie Pearl Brown and Emma Louise Howell. Cecil was a veteran of WWII and a POW for 18 months in Germany. He received European, African-Middle Eastern Campaign and good conduct medals. He worked for a local farmer in Germany during his imprisonment. He suffered a broken ankle, broken jaw and continuos lice infestation and lost over 13% of his body weight during his term. Because of his ailments suffered during the war he was unable to continue his quest to play in all the sports he participated in prior to the war. Cecil was employed by Eli Lilly & Co. for 32 years, retiring in 1985 as a Senior Bio-Chemist Lab Technician. He formulated the process to test insulin prior to gaining approval for its release. His technique was written in the Scientific American Journal and twice he was credited with establishing the baseline acceptance standards for quality assurance of insulin. Cecil was married in 1947 to Bettie Jean Minton, of which they enjoyed 57 years of marriage. They had five children, all surviving. He was a devoted husband and father, we believe there was never a better friend to many than Cecil. He was a member of Wallace St. Presbyterian Church and was baptized a Christian. Cecil is survived by his wife Bettie; sons Malcolm (Kathy) and Kerry Howell; daughters Sharon (Charles) Lepper, Toni Diehl, Kimberley (Ron) Thomas; nine grandchildren Christopher, Todd, Laura, Melissa, Andrea, Shannon, Sean, Ryan and KayLyn; eight great-grandchildren Megan, Cody, Christian, Justin, Taylor, Jordan, Jaymen and Jonah. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 2, 2005 in Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Center - Washington Park East, where friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2005.
