Alma Allen Rogers Burke died on Friday, October 2 at 6am at Presbyterian Home at Hawfields in Mebane, NC. She was the daughter of the late Olena and Malcolm Allen and lived much of her life in Person County where she was born on August 30, 1912. She grew up in a family of 18 children.
A funeral service will be held at Brooks & White Funeral Home in Roxboro, NC on 4PM Sunday, October 4, 2009 by the Rev. Edgar DeJesus and the Elder Jimmy Gray. Visitation will be held from 2:30-4PM Sunday, October 2, 2009, prior to the service. Burial services will follow the funeral at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Hurdle Mills, NC.

She is survived by four children: Linda Rogers Ollis (Macon) of Hillsborough, NC, Harold E. Rogers (Joanne) of Liberty, NC, Edna Rogers Barringer (Delton) and Alton D. Rogers (Phyllis), all of Gibsonville, NC. Other survivors include five grandchildren, Kirk Ollis, Kyle Ollis, Theresa Melton, Lyle Barringer and Woody Rogers; one step-grandchild, twelve great-grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren; four sisters: Martha Rudder and Katie Rudder Bowes, both of Hurdle Mills, NC, Nettie Solomon of Prospect Hill, NC and Naomi Davis of Reidsville, NC and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Burke was preceded in death by husband Zeb Vance Rogers, who died in 1981, and Jimmy Burke, sisters Sally Long, Mary Bowes, Cornelia (Neilie) Long and Rosa Norris and brothers, Willie, Thomas, Alvin and Joseph Allen. She was also preceded in death by half-sisters Ruthie Pearl Horton and Emily Anne Brooks and half-brothers Daniel, David and Johnny Allen.

Alma and Zeb moved to Gibsonville in 1967 to help with baby sitting of young grandchildren. As the grandchildren grew older, she started a career as a caregiver/companion to shut-ins and others in need of help. This became a passion for her as she always adjusted her schedule to fit the needs of her patients. There was always a list of people wanting to employ her. She had many friends during her years in Gibsonville where she was an active member of Gibsonville Christian Church.

In 2004, Mrs. Burke moved to Presbyterian Home at Hawfields where she lived independently for a period before moving to home's assisted living area. The family is very appreciative to the administration and staff at Hawfields for the care she was given there.

Pallbearers will be Cecil Allen, Reuben Bowes, Henry Long, Donald Rudder, Michael Rudder and Gary Solomon.

Memorial contribution in her memory may be made to Gibsonville Christian Church, 325 Burke St., Gibsonville, NC, 27249 or Mt. Zion United Methodist Church, c/o Betty Jean Horton, 497 Long's Store Rd., Roxboro, NC, 27574.
