"Karsemeyer, 76, dies 7 months after bike injury.

Just about everybody from Glen Ellen to Kenwood knew Clarence Karsemeyer, the 76-year-old retiree who rode his bike like clock-work every day for more than 10 years at 9 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m.

He died Monday seven months after his bicycle was hit by a Sonoma County Transit bus along Highway 12.

'He just really loved Sonoma Valley. How he loved to ride that bike. He died doing what he loved to do best. That is what we always try to think about,' his widow, Margie said Wednesday.

The official cause of death was brain injuries, senior coroner Greg Berry said.

Family members who saw karsemeyer's 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame waste to 100 pounds were grateful doctors believed he was unaware of his condition.

He was blinded and crippled by the Sept. 21 accident.

The Karsemeyer family was catapulted into a lingering controversy over Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital's emergency helicopter flights, when the hospital refused to accept him because it had surpassed its quarterly quota of landings.

The ambulance helicopter touched down but was forced to fly off without him when it was told of Memorial's decision.

Karsemeyer instead was transported in a 20-minute ambulance ride to the hospital, a factor that has added to the family's suffering, Margie Karsemeyer said.

'When they were right here and then they went back without him, God, it was like a stab in the heart,' she said.

Kenwood Fird Chief Ed Geib said he was incensed by the action and testified last year the quota should be iincreased.

'I know doctors from the emergency room were pretty upset about it,' Geib said. 'It made all of us in this business angry that he got turned away because of a quota on helicopters.'

Mrs Karsemeyer said she wrote a letter to former Mayor Jack Healy complaining, but never received a reply.

The issue comes up again in June, said Community Development Director Wayne Goldberg.

Karsemeyer, a retired welder from General Motors, moved to Sonoma County 13 years ago from Lakewood.

In addition to his widow, he is survived by his son John A. Karsemeyer and two grandchildren of Glen Ellen; his brothers, William and James Karsemeyer, both of Paramount, and Albert Karsemeyer of Redlands.

Services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Andrews. Burial will be at Santa Rosa Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m Thursday and from 9 a.m. unti noon on Friday."
