James migrated to Mo. in 1808 to what is now Rockyford Township, BooneCo., Mo. During the war of 1812 he was at Fort Kincade. He taught school at Fort Cooper and one of his pupils was the afterwards celebrated "Kit Carson". In the early months, He took a flatboat to New Orleans loadedwith nine kinds of wild meat, honey, corn, potatoes, onions, furs, hides,deer and elk horns, etc. and returned with the profits of his trip in thelate spring of 1815. He frequently visited his father in Fort Hempstead.There he met and married Elizabeth Burkhartt who was at Fort Hempsteadwith her mother and father, Elizabeth and Christopher Burkhartt.Christpher designed the great seal of the State of Missouri. James was the first of his family to settle in, what is now, Boone County Missouri in an area then known as "Thrall's Prairie". Death notice - age 86 yrs 4m 18d-Columbia, Missouri Statesmen February 12, 1875 3/4,19 February 18752/3, Life Sketch & Missouri Religious History 8 September 1865 2/4. There has been a book written on his descendants and a copy of such can be found in the Historical Society of Missouri located in the lower level of the Ellis Library, University of Missouri-Columbia. 1

Was in the mounted Militia of Missouri Territory, Capt. Sarshell Cooper's company in 1812 and Capt. Ben Cooper's company in 1814.
