Mr. Merrell was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He grew up in Hendersonville and graduated from Western Carolina Univ. & earned his master's degree in education from the George Peabody College of Vanderbilt Univ.
In 1982 he retired as a principal after a 35 year career in education, including 19 years as principal of Idlewild Elem. School and 6 years as principal of Piney Grove Elem. School.
Mr. Merrell is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Zelda Gentry Merrell, son & daughter-inlaw, Dale & Barbara Merrell of Concord, 4 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Osie Stepp Merrell.
