George Armstrong Spencer set out the first orchard in White County. He was instrumental in the agricultural advancement of the county. His home was where the first White Circuit Court held session. He was the first White County treasurer. The first schoolhouse in the county was built on his land. His grandfather, James Spencer Jr. was a soldier in the American Revolution. George served in the War of 1812. He and his wife Sarah had eight children and a number of his sons served in the Union Army during the Civil War.
