Born in Annapolis Naval Academy, Maryland, he became Acting Commissioner of the North West Mounted Police (NWMP) and Acting Commissioner of the Yukon Territory of Canada from 1902 to 1903. He served in the NWMP and the RNWMP from 1885 to 1915. In 1998, Mount Wood in the Yukon was renamed by the Canadian Government in honor of Zachary Taylor Wood for the 125th Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). His great grandfather was U.S. President Zachary Taylor and his father was Civil War Confederate Naval Officer John Taylor Wood. He died in Asheville, North Carolina.
