Daniel Potteiger died of old age at his residence, 15 South 2nd, aged 79 years. Deceased had been ill for several months. He was born in Jefferson Township and was a son of the late John Potteiger. On February 13, 1847, Governor Shunk commissioned him justice of the peace for Upper Tulpehocken Township. In 1852, Governor Bigler commissioned him justice of the peace for Jefferson. Deceased filled the office of county surveyor from 1845 to 1850, and was elected clerk of the orphan's court in 1854 and served until 1857. From 1860 to 1863 he was a clerk in the register's office during the term of Benjamin E. Dry, and when Tobias Barto became sheriff, deceased was appointed one of his deputies. On August 22, 1864, when the free delivery system was established in Reading, he was appointed a letter carrier and served during the terms of the different postmasters up to the time of Calvin Goodman was appointed. Mr. Potteiger was appointed alderman of the 5th ward in 1875 and re-elected in 1881. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Chuirch. He removed to this city when elected clerk of the orphan's court. His widow, 8 children, 14 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren survive. The following are the surviving children: Dr. J. B. Potteiger, Hamburg; Sergeant Wm. Alfred Potteiger, Fort Reilly, Neb.; Maria, wife of Cornelius Rauch, this city; Elias Potteiger, this city; Sallie, wife of H. M. Gehman, Phila.; Kate, wife of Wm.
