Bert (as he was always referred to by family and friends) was born in Roseville, California on January 31, 1883. He was the son of Robert Duckworth and Sarah Ann (Givens) Jones. Five years after he was born, he and his family moved to the Okanogan Valley in Washington Territory and established a homestead on Salmon Creek, west of the town of Okanogan. Bert attended the Clover School, just downstream from their ranch. During his lifetime Bert ranched, served as a deputy assessor, built roads throughout the county, and worked in logging. He settled in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, a few miles from Wenatchee and was active in the logging industry. A few years before his death, he moved to the town of Okanogan to live with his sister Node. After an extended illness, he died at the age of 74 on April 30, 1957. He, like his sister Node, remained unmarried his entire life. He is buried in the Jones plot at Spring Coulee Family Cemetery (also called the Clover Cemetery), just a few miles from the family Salmon Creek homestead.
