Tompkins, Lawrence Ovid-Age 84, of Armathwaite, passed away at Harriman City Hospital, February 17, 1988, following a lingering illness. He was the son of the late John Cal and Florence Peters Tompkins. He was also preceded in death by three brothers: Virgil, Everett and Willis Tompkins and one sister: Donnie Tompkins. He is survived by his wife Gertie Ellis Tompkins of Armathwaite; two sons: Elwood Tompkins of Oakdale, Tennessee, Varon Tompkins of Miamisburg, Ohio; one daughter: Mrs. Reginia Combs of Middletown, Ohio; six grandchildren and one great grandchild. He is also survived by three brothers: Clarence and Corwin Tompkins of Armathwaite, L.D. Tompkins of Allardt; two sisters: Mrs. Danzie Voiles of Armathwaite and Mrs. Wilda Bridges; a large number of other relatives and friends. He professed a hope in Christ at an early age and joined the Fellowship Baptist Church. Being endowed with a great gift for music, be began singing when he was very young and remained a member and choir director as long as his health permitted. Funeral services were conducted Saturday, February 20, at 11:00 a.m. at Fellowship Baptist Church with Bro. Billy Mitchell and Bro. Caldwell Smith officiating with interment in the Fellowship Cemetery. Munday Funeral Home was in charge of the services. (Source: West Union Association of United Baptists Minutes, 1988, p31-32)
