Winslow Willard Washburn, the ninth and youngest child of Doc William and Frances Katherine Bristow Washburn, passed away May 25, 2000, after a long fight with lung disease and more recently cancer.
Mr. Washburn was born Sept. 26, 1920, in Cape Henry, Va. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in bomb and other unexploded ordnance disposal. He was a member of the U.S. Naval Explosive Ordnance Alumni Association.
He was a charter member of the Virginia Beach Jaycees, and was honored with the first Key Man Award, and the first Lifetime Member Award. He was an avid fisherman, and a lifetime American Red Cross donor having donated 20 gallons of blood during his life. Other memberships include American Legion, National Rifle Association, Tidewater Builders Association, and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach.
Mr. Washburn helped establish the Virginia Beach Gas Co. He was a salesman for Phillip Carey and U.S. Plywood/Champion Papers. He was a construction inspector for Ameribanc. He was predeceased by his first wife, Betty Sue Laughridge Washburn.
He is survived by his loving wife of many years, Velma; a daughter, Susan B. Washburn; a stepdaughter, Patricia Neal; a stepson, W. Bradford Neal; and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Granby Street, Norfolk, by the Rev. Georgianna Brabban Johnson. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Maestas Funeral Home, Baltic Ave. Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, 740 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach VA 23451, the National Kidney Foundation of Virginia, 5001 W. Broad St. No. 217, Richmond, VA 23230, and the American Cancer Society, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, VA 23513.
