Alvah (Alva) was the 5th of 7 children born to Alfred (1801-1861) & Hannah (Osgood) Bartholomew (1801-1860). Alvah's siblings were: Sylvester (1822-1894), Arvin (1825-1825), Alfred (1827-1914), Judson (Jutson/Justin) (1830-1914), Isaac (1835-1918), and Daniel (1840-1924).

Alvah married Margaret Rhine (1831-1909) by whom he had 7 children (4 sons and 3 daughters): Mary (b. 1853), Clara (b. 1854), Alvah (1856-1907), Myron (b. 1857), Sarah (1858-1874), Charles (b. 1859), and Fredric (b. 1862).

"An ______ Family - The family of Mr. Alvah Bartholomew in the east part of the town, has been sorely afflicted and troubled this spring. Mr. Bartholomew has been sick for about six weeks with typhoid fever. One of his daughters died of it last week, two sons are down with it and another daughter has been sick. From the circumstances of this case, as reported to us, we have little doubt that the disease was communicated to the family by the use of water from a certain well. The well is near the barn yard, and thought the water is clear and cold, there is little doubt but that the impurities from the barn yard have filtered into the water and produced the disease. Typhoid fever, in many cases, arises from the use of impure water."
