He was preceded in death by his parents, Aaron Melton and Minnie Pittman Melton; three brothers, Fleming Melton, Cecil Melton, Linzy Melton and two sisters, Ruby Thrift and Lucille Haynes.
He was a retired fireman with the City Of Waycross and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, the Senior Adult Men's Sunday School Class and served as a Deacon.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Frances Thrift Melton of Waycross; a daughter, Susan Lanier (husband Wayne) of Waycross; two sons, Eddie Melton (wife Judy) of Lynchburg, VA, Mike Melton (wife Dolores) of Waycross; four grandchildren, Tony Lewis, Jr., Dusty Lewis (wife Renee), Beth Melton and Jessica Melton; three Great Grandchildren; three Step-Grandchildren; three sisters, Pearl Tatum of Waycross, Nella Faye Morgan of Kingsland, Jeanette Hersey (Curtis) of Waycross; a brother, Gene Melton (wife Mary) of Kingsland; special friends, Billy and Doris Brantley of Waycross; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday (March 1, 2014) at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.
The family will be receiving friends at Music Funeral Home Friday night from 6 until 8. The family request retired and active firemen of the Waycross City Fire Department to meet at the church at 10:40 a.m. to serve as honorary pallbearers.
