Born in La-Grange, Ga., he was a son of the late Ernest Robert and Annie Lola Levi Hearn. He attended Georgia Tech and served in the Army during World War II. He retired as project engineer for Hoescht Celanese Corp. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church of Shelby and was a former Scoutmaster and was active in the Boy Scouts of America. He also enjoyed woodworking.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lela Haley Goodson.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret Tharp Hearn of Rock Hill; three sons, Ernest Robert Bob Hearn and wife, Monica, of Rock Hill, Jim John Hearn Jr. and wife, Donna, of St. Louis, Mo., and Samuel Marshall Hearn of Charleston, S.C.; one daughter, Frances Thompson and husband, Louis of Ocala, Fla.; one sister, Ernestine Allen of LaGrange; and five grandchildren, James, Ashleigh, Daniel, Julian and Lucas Hearn.
A graveside service will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery, with Drs. John Boggs and Joe Reeves officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.
