The daughter of John Hill and Catherine Bueschmann, "Katie" was born in Hessen, Darmstadt, Germany. She came to the United States sometime between the ages of 8 and 12.

Katie married "Wilhelm" Altenbernd on 08 Jan 1864. They were the parents of at least 9 children.

The Altenbernds helped found St. Paul's Evangelical Church in Eudora, Douglas County, Kansas.

At the time of her death, Katie was 69-years-old. She was buried next to her husband, Wilhelm, who passed away in 1905.
