Lee was the son of Rhoda Ellen Cline and Adam Alexander Abernathy. His siblings were John P, Gertrude Jane Holdsclaw, James M, Lura Augusta Everhart, Lucy Ellen, Bunie Brinkley and George W Abernathy.

On Dec 13, 1906 he became the husband of Connie Cashion,the daughter of William and Sarah (Howard) Cashion. This union was blessed with Annie Mable Luckey, Sara Pauline Edwards Williams, Jessie Belle Long, Roy Lee Abernathy, Elsie May Primm, William Shellum and Helen Margaret Ross.
