Wanita A. McLean, 91, Escondido, Calif., a Miami County native, died Wednesday, Sept. 22, 2004, at a hospital in Escondido.
She was born June 27, 1913, in Stanton Township in Miami County, the daughter of Harry and Laura Ogden Sherar. She grew up in Miami County and graduated in 1930 from Paola High School.
She graduated in 1933 from nursing school at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo. She worked at the hospital several years and then did private nursing. She was a registered nurse for 24 years before retiring.
Mrs. McLean joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps on Dec. 8, 1942, and trained at Fort Riley, Kan. She was sent to England and served until Feb. 1, 1946, attaining the rank of captain.
After returning to the states, she went to San Francisco, Calif. She married T.M. McLean of Concordia, Kan. They lived in Carmel, Calif. They later moved to Escondido. Her husband preceded her in death.
Others preceding her in death were a sister, Dorothy Sherar Nutt, and a brother, Harold Sherar.
She is survived by three nephews and three nieces, including Arline Nutt Hrenchir of Paola.
Mrs. McLean was cremated and will be buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery of rural Paola at a later date.
