JUDGE BAER'S CAREER
He Was Long Regarded Leader of the Somerset Bar

SOMERSET, Pa., Jan. 29— (Special) Judge William J. Baer, the oldest brother of President George F. Baer of the Philadelphia & Reading railroad, died here yesterday morning. As a lawyer, Judge Baer was regarded as leader of the Somerset bar.

He was a member of the Constitutional Convention in 1872 and his service in that body won him a wide reputation as a constitutional lawyer. Judge Baer was a Democrat but was widely popular in the memorable judicial campaign of 1884, defeated John Cessna by a plurality of 100 votes in the overwhelmingly Republican Somerset Bedford district.

He was born in Berlin, this county, January 20, 1826, and was admitted to the Somerset bar in 1849. He is survived by his widow and these children; Mrs., John Gogle, Mrs. A. D. G…., Mrs. Edna Durst and Miss Mary Baer, all of Somerset.

Judge Baer promoted many Somerset county enterprises. He owned 79,000 acres of land in this county. He organized and was the first President of the Somerset & Cambria railroad, the largest carrier of bituminous coal in the State, founded the town of Ursina and was the first to develop the mining industry in this community.
