Although the modern replacement marker for John Banks and Deborah Newman repeats the initially published assertion (in 1907 by Robert B. Miller, and again verbatim in 1911 by Spencer P. Mead) that Deborah Newman, wife of John Banks, was a daughter of Joseph Newman, thorough investigation of the Newman family reveals no Joseph Newman in the correct age category to have fathered Deborah Newman (b. 1730). Instead, Joseph Newman (1732 — 1820), neighbor of John Banks and his wife, was likely a brother of Deborah Newman.

Joseph Newman was a son of Jonathan Newman (b. 1690) and Sarah Finch (b. 1692) of Stamford and later Stanwich in Fairfield County, Connecticut, which border North Castle in Westchester County, New York to the southeast. The births of some of the children of Jonathan Newman and Sarah Finch were not recorded in Stamford by the town clerk, especially after this couple relocated to the northwest in the late 1720s before Stanwich parish was established.
On 7 February 1759, Jonathan Newman of Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut sold land to his "well beloved son" Joseph Newman.

Notably, Deborah Newman had children named Jonathan Banks (b. 1759) and Sarah Banks (b. 1761), in addition to Joseph Banks (b. 1758).
