Louise Batson Incerto died suddenly on Wednesday, September 23, 2009, at New
Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. Surrounded by her three loving daughters, Frances Incerto Cronin of Abington, MA; Margaret Incerto Zachry of Washington Crossing, PA; and Barbara Incerto Canaday of Wilmington, NC, she left this earthly life peacefully encircled by the very love that had exemplified her eighty-eight years. She was pre-deceased by her devoted and beloved husband of fifty-six years, Frank Aloysius Incerto, on August 23, 2004.
Born in Burgaw, NC, the third child of the late Edgar Thomas and Ola Belle Cobb Batson, Louise arrived on Mother's Day, May 8, 1921, and was raised on Old Riverside Farm. Mrs. Batson always maintained that her daughter was the best present she ever received on that special day.
After graduating from Burgaw High School, Louise chose to attend Kings Business School in Raleigh, NC. Her career led her in many directions, all the way from The Atlantic Coastline Railroad in Wilmington, NC, to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. It was there that, as sole secretary in the radiology department, she was in charge of transcribing every x-ray for the entire hospital.
A Southern girl working in Jacksonville, NC, during the start of WW II, she met and fell in love with Frank Incerto, a Marine from Norwalk, CT. They were married on January 24, 1948, and lived in Norwalk, CT for almost forty years. During that time she raised her family and was an equal partner in her husband's real estate business where she provided much of the organizational and financial expertise. She had a shrewd business sense. In addition, she found time to make her daughters' clothes, from embroidered
baby clothes to prom dresses; to garden, read, play the piano, and keep an immaculate house, all the while being involved in her children's activities.
In 1986 Frank fulfilled his long ago promise and brought Louise back to her native Southeastern North Carolina. Settling in Wilmington, NC, she was so pleased to be close to her youngest daughter, Barbara, and her family. There she continued to assist her husband in his many new real estate ventures.
Besides her husband and three daughters, she leaves behind her daughters' spouses, whom she came to love as her own sons: Christopher J. Cronin; William B. Zachry, III; and Jeffery G. Canaday. She also leaves behind her seven adored grandchildren: Karena Louise Cronin of Johannesburg, South Africa; Katherine Croom Zachry of West Hartford, CT; Christopher Justin Cronin of Boulder, CO; William B. Zachry, IV, of Houston, TX; James Francis Zachry of Washington Crossing, PA; and Jessica Louise Canaday and Jeffery D. Canaday, both of Wilmington. Her only surviving sibling is Mary Alice Ward of Lumberton, NC, and her remaining sister-in-law is Edith Crowley Batson of Burgaw, NC. Deceased siblings and their spouses include: Edgar Thomas Batson, Jr., and wife, Mary Cox Batson; Elizabeth (Beth) Dees and husband, Robert R. Dees; Arthur Carr Batson; and Dr. Frank P. Ward. She was pre-deceased as well by her niece, Elizabeth Noll.
Funeral arrangements have been made through Andrews Mortuary at 1617 Market Street in Wilmington. Visiting hours will be on Sunday, September 27, between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. and other times at the home.
The funeral mass will be Monday, September 28, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark Catholic Church, 1011 Eastwood Road. Internment will immediately follow at Oleander Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are invited to a luncheon immediately following internment.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mrs. Incerto's memory to The Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave, FL 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633 or the American Cancer Society, PO Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718.
