Suicide Verdict Given In Death of M. E. Easley
With his arms carefully folded in the manner of a corpse prepared for burial and with a partially emptied bottle of strychnine nearby, the body of M. E. Easley, 61, well known farmer, was found late Sunday afternoon at his home two miles North of New York. The body of the man who had lived alone since his separation from his wife sometime ago was found by relatives who had gone to the home to visit him.
There was every evidence that the deceased had carefully planned his death. Everything had been put in order in the room, his clothes had been carefully laid out near the bed and a half-empty glass of water and a pocket knife, used to open the strychnine bottle, all gave mute evidence as to how carefully the man had planned his own death.
While here Saturday afternoon, he had talked with a number of friends at the court house including B. C. Hall. To Mr. Hall he appeared to be very worried.
Court records revealed this morning that his estranged wife had filed a divorce suit and that application had been made for an injunction to restrain the deceased from disposing of any of the property owned jointly by the two.
Judge Ayres of LaRue went to the Easley home Sunday night and held an inquest. He announced a verdict of suicide.
Funeral services for the deceased were held Monday morning at 11 o’clock at Leagueville where burial took place.
