January 30, 1889, the congregation mourned the death of Friedrich and Katherine (Schwabenland) Erbes's twenty-eight year old son, Friedrich Erbes. Friedrich, a farmer had gone out hunting the previous week. Spotted some game, he jumped off his sleigh while pulling out his gun with barrel pointing toward him. The shotgun discharged, slightly wounded Friedrich in the shoulder. Since the wound was so small, he thought nothing of the injury. But then blood poisoning set in and Friedrich died of lockjaw on Wednesday, about noon.
