George Christopher Brennecke Jr., 91, of Napa will be honored at a funeral to be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the Yountville Community Church, 6621 Yount St, Yountville, Calif. Longtime family friend, Pastor Dean Pense will be officiating. Immediately following the service, lunch will be served in the church social hall. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Tulocay Cemetery, 411 Coombsville Rd.
On Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, George Christopher Brennecke, Jr. went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He was born to George Christopher Brennecke and Mary Cecil Walker Brennecke on April 3, 1916 in Moran, Kansas. He and his brothers, Willis Henry Brennecke (Carol), Robert Walker Brennecke (Pam) and his sister, Lucille Anita Brennecke Greenlee (Fred) were raised on a farm in Turlock.
George graduated from Turlock Union High School in 1933, during the Great Depression. He worked his way through Modesto Junior College at the old Espindola Grocery Store and proudly graduated with his Associates degree in 1936. He went to work full time at J.C. Penney's in Turlock, and then transferred to take an Assistant Manager position at the store in Healdsburg. It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Gladys Schieffer Burson. They raised two children, Byron Bernard Burson Brennecke and Sandra Lee Brennecke Joe (Jay). George was the proud grandfather of Scott Brennecke (Donna), Debbie Brennecke Bassett (Greg) and Renee Brennecke Peterschmidt (Mike). He was the beloved great-grandfather of Brittany Brennecke, Michelyne Bassett Gutierrez (Ryan), Sydney Bassett, Brooke Peterschmidt, Tyler Peterschmidt, Jordan Peterschmidt, Aaron Peterschmidt, Andrew Peterschmidt, Evan Peterschmidt, and great-great grandfather of Keenon Gutierrez. Also surviving George are many cherished nephews and nieces, including Bob Brennecke Jr. (Diana), Mark Brennecke, Leslie Bennecke Hardesty (Tim), the late Larry Brennecke (Lori), Shirley Brennecke Ferguson (Bob), Gary Greenlee (Penny), Dale Greenlee (Karen), Dennis Greenlee (Rhonda) and their children numbering over 16. He has also maintained a very close relationship with his daughter-in-law, Berit Brennecke Johanson and her husband Mark.
George, Gladys, Byron and Sandy settled in Vallejo after his service in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. He also served in the National Guard, Company A, 185th Infantry from 1932 to1935. He worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard for 31 years and worked his way up from the supply department to the Administrative Assistant to the Naval Captain, retiring in 1973 and moving to Napa. He and Gladys celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary at a surprise party in 1984. Gladys went home to be with the Lord in 1988.
George met his second love, Eileen Randol in 1989, while both were attending First Christian Church in Napa. They remained the closest of companions for the past 18 years and enjoyed traveling the world and cherishing one another. Eileen's daughter, Sandy Randol Caton and her husband, Brook Caton and their two sons, Ty and Ryan, became his adopted family as well.
In addition to being active at the Church of Christ in Vallejo and First Christian Church in Napa for many years, he loved building projects. He, with the help of many family members, built a family cabin at Lake Tahoe, remodeled and built investment property in Vallejo and assisted with new additions at First Christian Church in Napa. He was always ready, willing and able to assist neighbors in need with their home repairs.
He served his community in many capacities and took his civic duties very seriously. George was a member of the advisory board of Mare Island Federal Credit Union, Citizen's Advisory Committee in Vallejo, member of the Napa Elks Lodge, Sons in Retirement Branch 149, Roving Roosters RV Club, Riggers and Operators of Past Employment, and a proud booster of the Republican Party. He believed in and advocated through letters and personal contacts to governmental representatives regarding preservation of endangered animals and environmental issues.
His health remained vigorous until 2004, and he enjoyed his life at home in Napa until his passing. He was honored at a 90th birthday luncheon held at the Napa Elks Lodge in April 2006, where 75 family members and friends celebrated precious memories. He loved social gatherings and family reunions where he and his brothers could entertain with their stories about the good 'ole days. He was very proud of his German heritage and it showed in the pride of hard work and diligence in everything he did. In the past two years, he was cared for at home by Jay and Ann Alojado and Ellen Estacio. They lovingly devoted themselves to him as though he was a member of their family. Missy, his devoted feline friend, provided him constant companionship with her cat anticsm which was the best medicine.
