He was born in Pendleton Distrist, South Carolina, the son of Charles Perry Bruce, Jr. and Mary Handy Harris. He was a Baptist Minister serving several churches in Anderson County, South Carolina. He married Elizabeth Fant on 20 January 1842 in Anderson Distrist, South Carolina and had at least 12 children which are listed on his wife's memorial. Charles died in Townville, Anderson County, South Carolina.
