Catherine was the daughter of Nicholas Hench and Catherine Jane Hamilton of Saville Township, Perry county, Pennsylvania. She lived there through at least 1870. In the summer of 1880, she was living with her widowed brother William Benton Hench and his one year old daughter Josephine in Pella township, Ford county, Illinois. She married Thomas Read of Pella township on Oct 1, 1880 in Chicago, Cook county, Illinois. Catherine and Thomas had twin girls in 1882. Catherine died shortly after they were born; the twins also died as infants.
