Edwin Lee Berry


Edwin Lee Berry of Converse, Texas, passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2009, at age 98.

He was born in Lufkin, Texas, and attended Lufkin schools, Texas A&M and Stephen F. Austin universities.

He worked in the East Texas oilfields as superintendent of plants at Gregg Co.,Tex, Longview, Texas; Gladewater; Hawkins; Waddell/Sandhills, Crane, Texas; and Monument, New Mexico.

After retirement from Warren Petroleum, he worked for Unichem in Hobbs, New Mexico.

Mr. Berry was active in church and civic organizations and was mayor of Warren City, Texas. He was much respected and loved by family, friends, and employees.

Mr. Berry was preceded in death by wife, Earlene (Courtney) Berry; his parents, John Franklin and Ora (McCoy) Berry; grandson, David Thorpe; and sister, Lorene Kerr.

He is survived by his daughters: Martha Thorpe and husband, Ed of San Antonio, Texas, and Lee Ann Johnson and husband, Wayne of Odessa, Texas; nieces: Karen Weaver and husband, John and Jane Hudgins and husband, Bill; nephew, Gary Smith and wife, Judy; grandchildren: Anne South and husband, Patrick, Courtney Johnson, and Sarah Viscardi and husband, Mike, and great-grandchildren: Harrison South, Rebecca South, Henry Viscardi and Caroline Viscardi.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m., today, September 23, 2009, at Schertz Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m Thursday, September 24, 2009, at Universal City United Methodist Church in Universal City, Texas.

Interment will be Saturday, September 26, 2009, at Berry Cemetery in Lufkin, Texas.
