Jacob enlisted in the Confederate States Army and received his appointment as 2nd Lieutenant on 28 March 1862. He was mustered in Company I, F&S, 1st South Carolina Artillery. He was captured on 10 July 1863 during Morris Island, South Carolina action and received at Johnson's Island, Ohio on 10 October 1863 as a prisoner of war. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 24 July 1863. Request for promotion was probably in the works prior to his capture. On 21 March 1865, Jacob was transferred to Point Lookout, Maryland for exchange which did not occur. He was released on 12 June 1865 upon taking the Oath of Allegiance at Fort Delaware, Delaware. He was described as follows: residence-Charleston, South Carolina, light complexion, light hair, grey eyes, height 5 feet & 11.75 inches.
