Aaron Richard Purdum died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dr. Davis, in Craig, Mo., January 31, 1913, aged 78 years, 3 months and 16 days. The body was brought to Corning and funeral services were held from the Congregational church Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the services being conducted by Rev. C. G. Marshall. Interment was made in Prairie Rose Cemetery, south of Corning.
Mr. Purdum was born in Georgetown, Ohio, October 15, 1834, and as a child with his parents moved to Illinois. Here he was married to Louisa Woodard, and to them eleven children were born. Mrs. Purdum died in 1884. In 1869 the family came to Adams county, where deceased made his home until the time 0f his demise. He was married again in 1888 to Melinda Smith, who died in 1898. Two of Mr. Purdum's children died in infancy and Herman, Jerry and Mrs. Delia Coleman have passed into the life beyond. The surviving children are Mrs. Dr. G. M. Davis, Craig, Mo.; Mrs. I. A. Clark, Humboldt, Iowa; George Purdum, Guthrie, Ok.; Richard, Bozeman; Hamilton, Kent; Iowa; Mrs. O. B. Hawley, Corning. All the surviving children except Richard were present at the funeral. Mr. Purdum was a veteran of the civil war, enlisting in company K, 102 Illinois volunteer infantry, and serving for three years.
Under the pastorate of Rev. Mason the deceased became a member of the local Congregational Church, and as his health permitted took an active part in the management of that organization, serving as one of its officers for a. number of years. He was well known to almost every one in this county, and his exemplary life and kindly disposition made a place for him in the affections of all. He was a good citizen without ostentation, and we shall all miss him.
