Marion Theresa Bertram was born January 19, 1923 to Tom and Angelina Bertram in Palisade, Colorado. She graduated from Palisade High School in 1941. She was honored with a scholarship to Ross Business College in Grand Junction, CO. After graduation she was employed by the C.D. Smith Company in Grand Junction for several years. Then on to the United Fruit Growers Association as a steno bookkeeper in Palisade and later with the USDA during the eradication of Peach Mosaic, a deadly virus of peaches. She married Albert Merlino on December 4, 1948, eloping to Steamboat Spring, CO. They had no children. For a time she furnished news articles to The Daily Sentinel and the Palisade Tribune about activities of organizations she was a member, the Palisade Pals Art Club, Palisade and Clifton Garden Clubs, and the Elks Club Ladies Auxiliary. Her natural talent for flower and dry arrangements earned her many first place and purchase awards at flower shows. She enjoyed traveling with friends to Italy, Scandinavia, Hawaii, Alaska and other places in Europe. She enjoyed the summers at their cabin on Grand Mesa at Hotel Twin Lake where flowers and birds were her specialty. She is survived by her husband, Albert; two sisters, Blanche Buescher of Grand Junction, CO, and Jean Bertram of Palisade, CO and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place on Monday, September 14, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Snell-McLean Funeral Home Chapel, Palisade. Burial will be in the Palisade Cemetery.
