Rubin P. Day sometimes spelled Reuben. I believe the 'P' stood for PRESTON. He was born; 1825 in Campbell County, TN. according to U.S. Civil War records. He applied for a marriage bond to marry Susan (possibly Oliver) Seals, in Campbell County, TN. July 13, 1842.
He is listed in the 1850 Monroe Co., TN, Census. that 1850 census listed Reuben P. Day as being 25 yrs old. In addition to Reuben the census listed Susan Day, age 39 as his wife, and the following children; Martha Day, age 15, b. in TN- William Day, age 7, b. in TN.- Sarah Day, age 6 b. in TN.- Isaiah, age 5 b. in TN,- and John Day, age 3, b. in TN.
Reuben is listed as marrying Matilda Jane Chasteen, (My Great Great Grandmother) sometimes spelled Chastain in Smith Twp., Laclede Co., MO. on March 27, 1857. According to the Smith Twp., Laclede Co., MO. 1860 Census Reuben P. Day, age 33 a blacksmith and Matilda Day lived in Dwelling #341 along with the following children; William Day, age 17- Sarah Day, age 16- Isaiah Day, age 14- John Day, age 12- and Polly Day, age 1, all born in TN except Polly. Polly died as a baby. In 1864 in Laclede Co., MO., Reuben and Matilda gave birth to a daughter Francis A. Day. Reuben Enlisted in the Union Army March 8, 1864 with Co. H 14th MO. Cavalry at Lebanon, Laclede CO., MO. Reuben enlisted a second time Aug. 27, 1864 in the Union Army commanded by Captain Hubbard and Company B 46th Regiment, MO., Infantry at Lebanon, MO. Oct 1864 Reuben was injured as he fell from the belfry of the Springfield, MO., court house some 20 ft. Reuben mustered out with Co. B 46th. Regiment Mar 7, 1865. Feb. 5, 1867 Reuben and Matilda gave birth to Robert Allen Day (my Great Grandfather) in Osage Twp,, Laclede Co., MO. In 1870 they had another son George in Laclede Co., MO.,1872 the birth of Isaac A. Day, 1877 the birth of a daughter, Nancy E. Day, born in Arkansas, probably Sebastain CO., Arkansas. 1880 the birth of another son, Franklin Benjamin Day, born in Arkansas, Reuben lived and family lived in Sugarloaf TWP. Sebastain CO., Ark. for the 1880 U.S. census. His 2nd wife Matilda died at this location in May 1883. Reuben married a 3rd time in Summers Twp., Washington Co., Arkansas June 7, 1885 to Mrs. Lydia Martha (Newman) Elms, Bower. I believe she was at least part Indian (Delaware and or Cherokee Tribe. No children in their 3rd marriage. Reuben died at the home of one of his grandsons, Marion Day, on May 7, 1893 Aurora Twp., Madison County, ARK. He was my GG Grandfather. , his 2nd wife Matilda Jane Chasteen is or G.G. Grandmother. There are books about her families genealogy (Pierre Chastain and his Descendants- Vol. 1 and 2, First five Generations in America, copyright 1995. Southern Heritage Press - Family and county histories, P.O. Box 10937, St. Petersburg, FL. 33733, 1-800-282-2823, -ISBN- 1203-2939-22-1) that list family back to France, I provided information listing her marriage to our G.G. Grandfather Reuben and their children together in early 2000's, that they didn't have at the time. This family Chastain/Chasteen has a annual family reunion usually in the southern U.S. Our Gr. GR. Grandmother, Matilda was born in Indiana. No grave site found, but believed to have died in Sebastain Co, Ark. assuming an affidavit by her son Robert is correct stating when she died. The affidavit was completed to allow Reuben's 3rd wife Lydia "Martha" (Roberts step-mom) to draw military pension from Reuben as a veteran. Robert had married one of Martha daughters by then Virginia (Bowers) my Grt. Grandmother. Copies of some of Reubens Civil War enlistment and discharge papers are in my paper file for him. Reuben Preston Day had four sisters and four brothers. He was the oldest child in that family.
