Company I, 38th Regiment of NC Troops

"Born in Rutherford County and resided in Cleveland County where he was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Cleveland County at age 27, November 21, 1861. Mustered in as Private, Promoted to 1st Sergeant in July-December, 1862, Promoted to 1st Sergeant on March 15, 1863. Present or accounted for until wounded at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, July 3, 1863. Returned to duty prior to September 1, 1863. Reduced to ranks on March 28, 1864. Wounded at or near Wilderness, Virginia, May 6, 1864. Returned to duy in July-August, 1864. Present or accounted for through October, 1864."

Sgt Fortenberry returned to Cleveland County and reared a family after the war. Though his marker bears no dates, the application for the stone, signed by D. P. Fortenberry, indicates Harbert died May 30, 1875.
