Mr Short and his T Model Ford...
I will never forget your Uncle Chester Short - we addressed him as Mr Short - One day our gang Mary Northcutt, your mom then Kate Cook, Hetty Campbell, Jennie L, Lorraine Mc and Reba Daily were coming home from our swimming in 'John Black's Pond'. We were tired, thirsty, dusty, sunburned and all straggler when Kate spied the car coming up the dusty road. It was Mr Short, Kate's uncle in his Model T Ford. She flagged him down, he stopped never smiled, so straight-laced but sweet and very polite. He was wearing a flat-top brim straw hat and a bow tie. He tipped his hat to us all and Kate asked him if we could hitch a ride with him to where we were going [headed home]. He told us we could ride but not inside. He had some things inside on the seats that could not be moved. He said we all could stand on the running boards and hang on if we liked. So that is what we did. He told some to get on each side of the car to balance it out. I was scared at first but I just hung on not daring to let go for fear of falling off - however now that I think of it I don't believe there was any danger of serious injury. I think we were only moving about 20 miles an hour. But it beat walking...
