A.J. Fontaine, 76, a longtime Crookston resident died at his home early Thursday morning, March 23 following a short illness.
Fontaine was born in Rural Brooks, Minnesota on February 7, 1902, the son of Zephier Fontaine and Marie Louise Gagner. He came with his parents to Crookstn as a young boy and received his education at St. Jospeh's Academy in Crookston.
Following his school years he worked in road construction and later with Eichhof and Sons Construction Company. In 1958 he entered into partnership with Olaf Saugstad and together the men did interior decorating until retirement in 1968.
Fontaine was united in marriage to Gladys Nelson in Crookston on August 1, 1940 and the couple had made their home at 511 Houston in Crookston Since that time. He was a member of the St. Anne's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys, one son Charles of Minot, North Dakota, two daughters, Mrs. William (Linda) LaFave of Thief River Falls, Mrs. Siegfried (Margaret) Blondell of Straffordville, Ontario, Canada, five grandchildren, Steve and Jennifer Fontaine, Trevor Blondell, and Shanna and Brandt LaFave. He is also survived by three brothers, Philip of Crookston, Joseph of Red Lake Falls, Louis of San Jose, California, two sisters, Mrs. Louis Gervais and Mrs. Anna Prudhomme, both of Crookston and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Henry.
