Joel Briney was born in Darke County Ohio in 1840 and went to Iowa in 1850. He settled in Adams Township,Maraska County, Iowa where in 1864 he married Elizabeth Roberts daughter of Lilburn and Miranda Stringfellow Roberts. Elizabeth was born in Henry, Kentucky in 1840. To this union were born six children as follows;
Infant daughter 1865-1865
Charles Andrew 1866-1959
William Farmer 1869-1948
Miranda J. 1871-1945
John Nelson 1872-1965
Lena Pearl 1879-1930
They were Democrat.
