Mr. Caldwell was born in Canton, and was the son of Charles C. Caldwell, twice sheriff of St. Lawrence county. He was educated at Canton High School and graduated from St. Lawrence University with the class of 1889. He worked as a clerk for the town of Canton and learned the practice of law with Worth Chamberlain. In the early 1890's he relocated to Brooklyn and became a partner in a large legal practice there, taking it over after the death of his partner.
In 1896 he was appointed assistant district attorney of Kings County and in 1912 he was named as first assistant district attorney.
Mr. Caldwell married a local Brooklyn woman, Anna L.C. Davis, who survived him along with a daughter Loraine aged 18, and a young son, Theodore. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Arthur Gledhill of Yuba City, California.
