Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Avery Conley Canipe and Mandy Newton Canipe. He was a self-employed paint contractor and served in the Marines during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Addie, Lester and Arthur Canipe; and two sisters, Ruth Hill and Mildred Vassey.
He is survived by his wife, Geraldine S. Canipe of the home; a daughter, Patricia Weathers of Shelby; two sons, Stephen Canipe of Shelby and Andre Canipe of Tabor City; a brother, Charles Canipe of Lincolnton; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel.
Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
