He was the son of Robert D. Heinl Sr. and Helen Corbin Heinl.
On September 23, 1939 as Robert Debs Heinl, he married Nancy Gordon Wright at the Bethlehem Chapel of the Washington Cathedral in the District of Columbia. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Albert H. Lucas. She was the daughter of Charles J. Wright.
They were the parents of two children including Pamela Heinl Burdick (1941-2011).

Robert Heinl, 62, a 1937 Yale University graduate and a Marine Corps veteran who fought at Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, and in Korea, wrote three books and retired as a Colonel in 1964 after 27 years of service, then served as a military analyst for the Detroit News from 1968 to 1978 and who was writing for the North American Newspaper Alliance at the time of his death, May 5, while vacationing in the Caribbean.

Each year The Colonel Robert Debs Heinl Jr. Award is given in memory of the distinguished Marine Corps officer, journalist, and historian. He was a founder of the Heritage Foundation and author of Soldiers of the Sea. The award is given to the author of the best article pertinent to Marine Corps history published in a newspaper, magazine, journal, or other periodical during the preceding year.
Age 62 years. Buried May 14, 1979. He died at St. Barthelemy, French West Indies.
