Edna Mary Rosson Melton
HONEY GROVE - Edna Melton of the Dial Community died at the Honey Grove Nursing Center Wednesday morning, Dec. 24.
She was born in Rosebud, Texas on August 1, 1911 to Bessie Gibbs and Louis Rossen. Due to Bessie's death, Louis brought his two small children, Edna and her sister, Merle, to live with his brother's family in Honey Grove.
Edna graduated from Honey Grove High School and continued a fomal education from East Texas Teachers' College in Commerce. Edna's teaching career began when she was eighteen years old. While attending college, she taught and was a principal for nine years in the community schools of McClellan, McCraw's Chapel, and Detroit. At this time she met Louie Ray Melton of the Dial Community. They were married on May 28, 1938 by the Rev. James Landes.
Edna joined the Dial Baptist Church and was baptized in 1928. She was a loyal follower of Jesus Christ her entire life. Edna served as the church clerk for thirty years, and was a committed Bible teacher, and had a passion for the missions. She organized and led W.M.S. and G.A.'s mission groups in her local church. She faithfully corresponded and encouraged foreign missionaries from all over the world.
Gifts of service and mercy were extended to the community with Edna's volunteering to work in the local nursing home, visiting with and befriending those in need, and lovingly caring for Mama Melton until her death. The Melton home was a haven of hospitality for pastors, friends, and family.
Until her health failed, Edna enjoyed grooming her beautiful country yard, having fun with fiends in the Friendship Club, and going to visit all her children and grandchildren.
In her last years, Edna was confined to her home, but enjoyment was found from cards, letters, pictures, and visits from family and friends. In her solitude she spent time in prayer and study. She also found comfort from the Bible reading and hymn singing of others. At this time, God sent a wonderful pastor and his wife to minister to Edna, along with many family members, friends, and neighbors. Edna was so grateful to be able to continue to live at home.
Edna, Miss Edna, Grandmother, Me Me, will be missed, but will be remembered for her example of steadfast devotion to her husband and family, the Dial Baptist Church family, and her heavenly family, the Lord Jesus Christ and His church.
Edna is survived by her husband of 59 years, Louie Ray Melton; one son and daughter-in-law, James and Sue Melton of College Station; one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Fred Ellis of Richardson; six grandchildren, Sherry and her husband, Tracy Heritage of College Station, Karen Melton of San Antonio, Alisa and her husband, Chuck Turner of Austin, Laurie and her husband, Mike Lindsey of Hillsboro, Mitch and his wife, Jodie of Richardson, and Mark Ellis of Richardson; four great grandchildren, Ashley and Matthew Heritage of College Station, Kenny and David Lindsey of Hillsboro; one sister-in-law, Glenda Melton Crafton of Lubbock, and nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Friday evening, Dec. 26 at the Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Honey Grove.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27 at the Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Honey Grove. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Rev. Alan Stoddard will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Bill Thurman, Loyd Cunningham, R. M. Charles, Delbert Sessums, Gerald Wishard, and Arthur Carter. Honorary pallbearers will be C. O. Charles, Bobby King, Louie Page and Henry Spruce.
The family requests that memorials and contributions be made to the Dial Baptist Church.
